How to Calculate Your Average Grade (With Examples)

Whether you’re a student checking where you stand or a teacher wrapping up a term, knowing how to calculate average grade correctly matters – a small mistake in the math can mean the difference between a B and a C. Here’s the simple method, plus how to handle weighted grades.

The average grade formula

At its simplest, an average grade is the sum of your scores divided by how many there are:

Average = (Grade 1 + Grade 2 + Grade 3 + …) / Number of grades

Step-by-step: simple average

  1. Add up all your grades. Use percentages so every score is on the same 0-100 scale.
  2. Count how many grades there are.
  3. Divide the total by the count. That’s your average.
  4. Match it to a letter grade (90+ = A, 80+ = B, 70+ = C, 60+ = D, below 60 = F).
Example: Your quiz scores are 85, 90, and 78.
Average = (85 + 90 + 78) / 3 = 253 / 3 = 84.33% – a solid B.

When grades count differently: weighted average

Most courses don’t weight everything equally – a final exam might count double a quiz. Then each grade needs its weight:

Weighted average = (Grade 1 x Weight 1 + Grade 2 x Weight 2 + …) / Total weight
Example: You scored 90% on homework worth 20% of your grade, and 80% on a midterm worth 30%.
Average = (90 x 20 + 80 x 30) / 50 = 4,200 / 50 = 84.00% – Grade B.
Note the weights don’t need to total 100; the math adjusts to whatever you entered.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Mixing points and percentages. Convert everything to percentages first (17 out of 20 = 85%).
  • Forgetting weights. Averaging 90 and 80 as (90+80)/2 = 85 is wrong if the two items counted differently.
  • Rounding too early. Keep two decimals through the math; round only the final answer.

What grade do you still need?

If you’re chasing a target – say, finishing with a 90 – work backwards from the weight that’s left. Our Average Grade Calculator has a built-in target planner: type your target and it tells you exactly what you need on the remaining weight.

Skip the hand math – let the calculator do it.
